Sister M. Philomena Foley CSC, 90, of Saint Mary’s Convent died at 9:45 a.m. Friday in the convent following a lengthy illness. Born Esther Margaret Foley on Dec. 19, 1895 in Providence, R.I, she entered the Congregation of the Sister of the Holy Cross, St. Mary’s on Oct. 12, 1912 coming from New York City. She entered the novitiate on Jul. 16, 1913 and took her first vows on Aug. 15, 1915.  She was a teacher assigned to teach at St. Joseph Academy and St. Joseph High School in South Bend; other assignments were in Goshen, Fort Wayne, Plymouth, Hammond, Anderson and Michigan City; and in California, Utah, New York, Idaho, Illinois and Washington DC. She resided at Our Lady of Holy Cross Convent from 1967 to 1979, when ill health caused her to retire in St. Mary’s Convent. Surviving is a niece, Frances Price of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

 

Services will be Monday afternoon in Our Lady of Loretto Church with burial in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, St. Mary’s. Friends may call today and Monday in St. Mary’s Convent Parlors, where a wake service will be at 7 p.m. today.
