SOUTH BEND - Russell L. Flatt Jr., 77, residing in South
Bend, passed away at 10:48 a.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2008, in his
home. He was born November 26, 1930, in Oakville, Kentucky, the
son of Russell L. and Anna C. (Skaggs) Flatt, Sr., and had
lived in South Bend since 1943 coming from Indianapolis, IN. On
November 28, 1963, in Sullivan, IN, he was united in marriage to
Rowena L. "Nan" Unger, who survives. He is also
survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Claudia and James Varga
of South Bend; three grandchildren who were the loves of his
life, Anna and Sam Varga, both of South Bend, and Allan Misk
of San Diego, CA. A sister, Wanda (Irving) Wilhelm of New
Carlisle, IN; and a brother, William L. (Roberta) Flatt of
LaPorte, IN survive Russell as well. He was preceded in death by
his parents; and a sister, Joyce Sipes. Mr. Flatt retired
in 1989 from the Union North School Corp. where he served as an
English teacher at LaVille High School for 23 years. He was also
Head Football Coach for many years, and taught Driver's Education
classes. He proudly served his country in Korea in the United
States Army, was a member of American Legion Post #297, New
Carlisle, NEA, ISTA, and St. Joseph County Retired Educators
Association. He received his BA from the University of
Indianapolis in 1958, and his MA from Indiana University,
Bloomington in 1967.
Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday,
July 12, at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South
Michigan Street, South Bend. The family will receive friends from
1:00 p.m. until service time Saturday. Graveside services and
military rites will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 14, at New
Carlisle Cemetery, New Carlisle, IN. Contributions in memory of
Mr. Flatt may be offered to The Big Blue at LaVille High School,
