SOUTH BEND - Irene M. Flanagan, 97,
of 834 34th St., died at 3:30 a.m. Saturday in Northwood Nursing
Home. Mrs. Flanagan was a Morse code telegraph operator for New
York Central Railroad for 11 years. She was born April 13, 1899,
in Washington County, Ill.
In 1919, she married William Flanagan. He
died in 1956. Surviving are two sons, J. Lee and Gerald W., both
of South Bend; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was the first woman to be appointed deputy clerk of St.
Joseph County Circuit Court and was a member of various ladies
auxiliaries of the Masonic Lodge.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in
Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William St. Burial will be in
Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. Friends may call from 4 to
6 p.m. today in the funeral home.
