Rev. Edward R. Fitzgerald CSC, 77, of
Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, died Tuesday in his residence after
a lengthy illness. He was born on July 15, 1903 in Roslindale,
Mass. and entered th Holy Cross Seminary in 1923. He made his
first profession of vows in the Congregation of Holy Cross in
1926 and graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1930.
After theological studies at Holy Cross College, Washington DC,
he was ordained to the priesthood on June 24, 1934 at Sacred
Heart Church, Notre Dame. He served on the Holy Cross Mission
Band, preaching parish mission from 1934 to 1941. From 1941 to
1961 he served as a chaplain in the US Army throughout the US,
Europe and Japan, retiring as Lieutenant Colonial. From 1961 to
1977 he worked in the midwestern, western and southern parts of
the US. He was retired in 1977 and resided in Coco Beach, Fla.,
until retiring to Holy Cross House, Notre Dame in 1979.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Moreau
Seminary Chapel, Notre Dame, with burial in the Holy Cross
Community Cemetery on the campus. Friends may call after 3:30
p.m. Thursday in the Chapel, where a wake will be observed at
7:30 p.m.
