Rev. Edward J. Finnegan CSC, 83, a
former member of the University of Notre Dame faculty and
longtime pastor of Sacred Heart Church on the campus, died at 1
a.m. today in Holy Cross House at Notre Dame. He was born on July
23, 1882 in Syracuse, Ind., entering the novitiate of the Holy
Cross Order on July 4, 1903. He made his final professional vows
on July 4, 1905 and was ordained to the priesthood on July 24,
1910. A 1906 graduate of Notre Dame, he did graduate work at
Catholic University of America, Washington DC. He served as
pastor of Sacred Heart Church from 1925 to 1952. From 1917 to
1919 he was an Army chaplain in France, holding the rank if First
Lieutenant.
He taught at Notre Dame from 1914 to 1917
and from 1920 to 1921. He also taught at Holy Cross College in
New Orleans from 1910 to 1912; St. Edwards University,
Austin Texas, from 1912 to 1914; University of Portland, Ore.
from 1919 to 1920; and Holy Cross Colleges Washington
Theological Seminary from 1921 to 1925. From 1952 to 1961 he
resided at Corby Hall on the campus and worked in the university
archives. He had been living in retirement at Holy Cross House
since 1961.
Friends may call after 1 p.m. Wednesday at
the Corby Hall Chapel. The office of the dead will be recited at
3:30 p.m. Thursday in Sacred Heart Church, will be followed by a
requiem mass. Burial will in Community Cemetery on the campus.
