SOUTH BEND - Alvin "Bud" Bernard Feuer, 84, of Roanoke,
VA, passed away on August 2, 2010. He was born in Freeport, IL,
on November 5, 1925. He was preceded in death by his father,
Samuel R. Feuer; his mother, Betty "Bess" C. Feuer; his
brother, Stanley B. Feuer; and by his son, James N. Feuer. He is
survived by his wife of 25 years, Mildred "Millie" M.
Feuer; son and wife, Robert "Bob" and Rhonda of
Lafayette, IN; his daughter and husband, Ellen and Benjamin
Greenberg of Baltimore, MD; his stepdaughter, Melinda Cox of
Roanoke; his stepson and wife, Fred and Cynthia of Roanoke; and
granddaughters, Steffanie Housman and husband, Joel, Kayla Feuer,
Heather Greenberg, Robyn Greenberg; and step-granddaughter,
Alexandra Cox. Bud was born in Freeport, IL, and grew up in South
Bend, IN, and was a member of the graduating class of 1947 from
the University of Notre Dame. He served as a PHM3 in the United
States Navy from January 1944 until July 1946 in the Carrier
Aircraft Service Unit 21 on the USS Houston CL-81 during WW II.
He was a business partner with his father in City News Agency in
South Bend, IN, for 20 years, worked as a historical military
researcher for the U.S. government and authored 13 military
history books. Bud was an animal and bird lover and a member of
the Kiwanis Club of Big Lick of Roanoke, the American Society of
Journalists and Authors, and the Society of Professional
Journalists. He was a life member of the Navy League of the
United States, the U.S. Naval Institute, and the Naval Historical
Society of Australia. The family will receive friends on
Saturday, August 7, 2010, at 2 p.m. for visitation to be followed
at 3 p.m. with a memorial service honoring Bud's life at Oakey's
Downtown Chapel in Roanoke, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family
suggests that memorial contributions be made to the local humane
society.
