John W. Ferguson, 78, of Kinyon Street, South Bend, died at 5:30 a.m. Sunday, January 30, 2005, in Regency Place of South Bend. John was born April 6, 1926, in Terrell, Oklahoma, to the late John T. and Kate (Wallace) Ferguson. He was also preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
Johns served in the U.S. Navy from 1944-1947. He received several medals and ribbons, including the Asiatic Pacific, American Area, Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Navy Unit Commendation. John worked for the South Bend Area School Corporation from 1962 to 1963. He taught science, math, social studies, health and coached at North Liberty Elementary School. John was the past owner of Ferguson Welding and Spring Fabrication in South Bend. He retired in 2004 from St. Joseph Paper and Packing Corporation. John also enjoyed meeting with his friends at the J&A Grill on Portage Avenue. John is survived by many nieces and nephews, as an uncle, great-uncle and great-great-uncle. He is also survived by his close companion, Eva Hab; and by a brother-in-law, Troy Smith of Wichita, Kan.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 3, 2005, in the New Apostolic Church, 5602 S. Ironwood, South Bend, with District Elder Donze and Shepherd Dale Nelson officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday prior to the services in the church, with fellowship after the services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the New Apostolic Church Youth Fund. Private graveside services will be held at Riverview Cemetery. The Welsheimer Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
