SOUTH BEND - Lewis Farris, 82, of North O'Brien Street, died at 2:05 a.m. Saturday in Meridian Nursing Center-Cardinal. Mr. Farris retired from the New York Central Railroad YMCA, Elkhart. He was born Jan. 22, 1913, in Atheimer, Ark., and lived in South Bend for 35 years.
He is survived by a daughter, Lena Simpson of South Bend; two stepdaughters, Lutisha Moss and Gloria Hardy, both of South Bend; two stepsons, Terry Lacey and Carl Lacey, both of South Bend; nine grandchildren; six sisters, Alie Belle Boykins, Ocie Lou Farris, Vivian Austin and Ernestine Freeman, all of South Bend, Myrtle Jones of Detroit, and Lillian Tyler of Oakland, Calif.; a brother, Willie Austin Farris of Omaha, Neb.; and a foster brother, Willie Martin of Pine Bluff, Ark. He served as a Sunday school teacher, was a deacon and a member of the trustee board and male chorus, all of Sweet Home Baptist Church.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today in the church. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. Friends may call one hour before services in the church. Alford's Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
