Rev. Salvatore P. Fanelli CSC, 91, who retired last year after 40 years as an assistant pastor at St. Joseph parish, died early today at Arlington Hospital, Arlington, Va., after suffering an apparent heart attack while vacationing there. He retired after 61 years in the priesthood. He was living in Holy Cross House at Notre Dame.

 

Father Fanelli was born on March 10, 1889 in Louisville, Ky. He entered the congregation of the Holy Cross on Aug. 15, 1913, and was ordained to the priesthood on June 16, 1918. From 1918 to 1920 he served at Sacred Heart Parish, New Orleans, La. After that he taught at Holy Cross High School in New Orleans, and at Sacred Heart College, Watertown, Wis. And served at St. Mary’s in Austin, Texas.

 

He was recognized as being the oldest Holy Cross priest of the Indiana Province. He also served as chaplain at various schools across the country, and worked extensively with the elderly, making visits to such places as Cardinal Nursing Home in South Bend. He is survived by two brothers, Anthony of Washington and John of Florida.

 

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday if St. Joseph Catholic Church, South Bend. Rev. Paul Wendel, pastor, will officiate. Rev. Andre Leveille will give the homily. Burial will be in Holy Cross Community Cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Tuesday in Moreau Seminary, Notre Dame, where a wake will be observed at 7:30 p.m. Arrangements are being made by Hickey Funeral Home.
