Sylvester J. Ewald, 79, of Granger, IN, passed away on Monday,
Feb. 17, in Saint Joseph Regional Med-ical Center. He was born on
December 7, 1923, in South Bend, IN, to Peter and Lil-lian
(Kowalew-ski) Ewald, both of whom preceded him in death. He was
also preceded in death by his two brothers, Joe and Don Ewald.
Mr. Ewald retired in February of 1987 as a line foreman from the
A.M. General Corporation, after 30 years of service. On July 3,
1945, in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, South Bend, IN, he
married Loretta M. Kominkiewicz, who survives. Also surviving are
his two sons, Kenneth J. Ewald, and his wife, Carol, and Thomas
M. Ewald, and his wife, Cathy, all of Indianapolis, IN; three
grandchildren, Michael Ewald, Alissa Trowbridge and Brett Ewald;
and his sister, Henrietta Garner of Prairie Village, KS. A
Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 21,
2003, in St. Pius X Catholic Church, with Rev. Daniel Scheidt,
C.S.C., officiating. Entombment will follow in St. Joseph Valley
Memorial Park, Granger, IN. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m.
Thursday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive,
where a parish vigil service will be held at 4 p.m., and for one
hour prior to services at church on Friday. Mr. Ewald was a
member of St. Pius X Parish, Usher's Club and the Senior Group.
He loved watching sports, especially the Cubs and Bulls. He also
enjoyed gardening and traveling. Memorial contributions may be
