SOUTH BEND - Bernice H. Ewald, 86, of West Thomas Street, South Bend, Ind., died at 11:10 a.m. Monday in Hospice House, Roseland, Ind. Mrs. Ewald was born July 31, 1910, in South Bend, and was a lifelong area resident.

She was married on Aug. 1, 1927, in South Bend, as Bernice H. Mezykowski to Leo M. Ewald, who preceded her in death in 1977. Mrs. Ewald is survived by four daughters, Helen Bogunia of South Bend, Theresa Arelt of Mishawaka, Ind., Joanne Cwik of Mishawaka and Esther Enoch of Catlin, Ill.; a son, Daniel of South Bend; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Alex Mezykowski of Mishawaka, and Frank and Casimer Mezykowski of South Bend.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Stephen's Catholic Church. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today in the St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Rd., where a rosary will be said at 4 p.m. Burial will take place in St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice House, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
