Sister Angela Marie (Aileen Delno Emrick) CSC, died at Saint Mary's Convent, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, Ind., on Saturday May 26, 2001.

 

Sister Angela Marie, a native of California, entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1948 and made her first vows in 1951. She served in numerous capacities in the fields of education and mission services including teacher, administrator, principal, assistant professor and consultant in schools, colleges, universities and health care organizations. These institutions included: in California: Saint Matthew's, San Mateo, 1953-1957, 1958-1963, 1976-1977; Beverly Hills Catholic School, Beverly Hills, 1965-1970, St. Pius School, Redwood City, 1977; in Utah: Holy Cross Hospital, Salt Lake City, 1951-1953, St. Mary of the Wasatch Academy, Salt Lake City, 1957-1958; Our Lady of Lourdes School, Salt Lake City, 1963-1964; in Arizona: St. Cyril's School, Tucson, 1964-1965, 1970-1971, University of Arizona, Tucson, 1977-1986.

 

From 1980 to 1982, Sister Angela Marie was assigned as a professor in the Department of Education at Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame, Indiana. She was a member of Saint Mary's College Board of Regents from 1990 to 1994 and Board of Trustees from 1994 to 2001.

In 1982 she founded and was the director of the Personhood Institute in South Bend, Indiana. This evolved into the Center for Human Empowerment at Mount Carmel Health in Columbus, Ohio, where she served from 1987 to 1998. In 1998 Sister Angela Marie became the assistant superior at Saint-Catherine-by-the-Sea, Ventura, California, a retirement facility for Sisters of the Holy Cross.

 

Sister Angela Marie was the recipient of several honors. She was included in Who's Who in American Education; was included in the 1998-1990 editions of Dictionary of International Biography and Who's Who of Women Executives; received a Woman of the Year Award for Organizational Empowerment from Soroptimists International in 1988; received a citation for organizational empowerment from the Catholic Health Association in 1990; was nominated in 1991 for a YWCA award for Woman of the Year; was honored for her desegregation work in the Tucson Unified School District in Tucson, Arizona, in 1980; was named teacher of the year at St. Cyril's School in Tucson, Arizona, in 1974; and was honored for services through Zontas with two rose bushes in the Municipal Rose Garden by Columbus, Ohio, mayor Dana Rinehart.

 

Wake service will be held at the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's Notre Dame, Indiana, Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at 7 p.m. Funeral mass will be at the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at 10:30 a.m., followed by interment at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, Saint Mary's Notre Dame, Indiana.
