Hazel Oveda Elwell, 72, of Orange Road, South Bend, Ind., died at 5:04 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center. She was born on July 7, 1930, in Mountainview, Ark., to Gus Dayberry and Bethel Ellen Trantham. Her parents, a son, Leonard D. Elwell, two sisters, Cora Belle and Agnes Porter, and a brother, Emmit Dayberry, all preceded her in death.
On May 22, 1948, in South Bend, as Hazel Oveda Dayberry, she married Leonard Elwell. Leonard preceded her in death on March 20, 1999. She is survived by her daughter, Shirley D. Sawyer of South Bend; and by two sons, David James (Sherry) Elwell of Mishawaka, Ind., and Joseph DeWayne Elwell of South Bend. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Steven R. Collins, Tabatha Elwell, Tonya Elwell and David Elwell; two step-grandchildren, Joey DeWitt and Adam Breden; and by two great-grandchildren, Kelsey Mathis and Karlie Collins.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Jan. 6, at 11 a.m. in the Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, with Rev. Philip Thomas of Ardmore Wesleyan Church officiating. Entombment will follow in Riverview Mausoleum. Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. today in the Palmer Funeral Home-River Park.
