George F. (Czegledy) Ellis, 78, of Manor Drive, Mishawaka, Ind., formerly of South Bend, Ind., passed away of natural causes at 10:07 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20 in Memorial Hospital. He was born on Nov. 6, 1920 in South Bend, to the late Geza and Mary (Illesh) Czegledy. He was also preceded in death by a sister Mary Haag; and by three brothers, Alex, Louis and Gay.
Mr. Ellis served in the United States Army in World War II from Feb. 20, 1942 to Oct. 4, 1945. His service included Fort Bragg, N.C. for basic training; assignment to 63rd Field Artillery Battalion of the 24th Infantry Division in Hawaii; then to Australia to group for the invasions of Hollandia, New Guinea; and to Leyte, Mindoro and Subic Bay of the Philippines. George was discharged honorably on Sept. 16, 1945 with three citations in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and two for the Philippine Liberation Theater. Mr. Ellis held a Real Estate and Life Insurance Brokers License in Indiana.
On October 12, 1945 he married his prewar sweetheart, Anna E. Johnson of Mishawaka. After 49 years of blessed bliss and marriage, Mrs. Ellis joined the Lord on Feb. 9, 1995. He is survived by three daughters, Georgiann Ellis of Gainesville, Fla., Gail Barker of Vandalia, Mich. and Gloria Hammer of Mishawaka; four sons, Glenn Ellis of Olympia, Wash., Greg Ellis of Tigard, Ore., Gary Ellis of Lexington, Ky., and Guy Ellis of Mishawaka; five granddaughters; four grandsons; a sister, Emma Van Vooren of Mishawaka; and by a brother, John Ellis of South Bend.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 S. Kemble Avenue. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County.
