Vernon Eley, aged 52, of 918 South Franklin street, died at 1:30 pm Tuesday in St. Joseph hospital after three months' illness.  He was born in Starke county, Indiana, May 21, 1897 and came here 35 years ago.  Surviving are four sisters, Mrs. Cora Shupert, Mrs. Hattie Kimble, and Mrs. Mina Wittner, of South Bend, and Mrs. Clifton Hale, of Fort Wayne, Ind., and a brother, John Eley, of Terre Haute, Ind.  Friends may call in the Hay funeral home from noon Thursday until the funeral there at 2 pm Friday.  Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.  Source: South Bend Tribune, November 9, 1949.
