Sherman Louis Egan, M.D.

Sherman L. Egan, 88, was born and
raised in Chicago, Ill., the fourth of seven sons of Edmund and
Helen Sexton Egan. He was preceded in death by his
parents; brothers, John, Alfred, William, Edmund (Rox), Franklin
and Eugene; and by his son, Patrick. Sherman attended Loyola
University and received his medical degree from Northwestern
University. He was a member of both Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi,
the National Honorary Scientific Society.
On June 12, 1937, in Chicago, Sherman
married Jean McKeever. They moved to Rochester, Minn.,
where Dr. Egan completed his residency in internal medicine at
the Mayo Clinic. He served as an Army captain in the Pacific
Islands during World War II.
After World War II, he moved to South Bend,
Ind., where he practiced internal medicine. Dr. and Mrs. Egan and
their eight children were well-known in the community. They were
longtime members of Holy Cross Catholic Church parish where their
children attended grade school for three decades! He is survived
by his wife; daughters, Judy (Jim) Donohue, Edina, Minn.,
Anne (William) Hergenrother, Akron, Ohio, and Mary Jean
(Dan) Osberger, South Bend; sons, Brendan (Dorothy),
Wayland, Mass., Dennis (Jane), Westfield, N.J., Philip (Cheryl),
Kalamazoo, Mich., and Hugh (Deborah), Ithaca, N.Y.; and by 26
grandchildren and more than a dozen great-grandchildren. The
Egans gave hospitality to many families and generations of
college students. Family traditions included the sharing of baked
goods, Sunday brunches, the annual Christmas Open House and
Christ Child Bazaars, and reunions at Lake Michigan.
Dr. Egan began his practice of internal
medicine in South Bend in 1946, and he served the community until
his retirement in 1981. He was held in high regard by his many
patients for the quality of care that he provided. His medical
practice also included care extended to the sisters, priests and
brothers of the Holy Cross. Dr. Egan was active in a number of
organizations including the local medical society, St. Joseph's
Hospital medical board and the St. Vincent De Paul Society. He
also served as the team physician to the Notre Dame football
team.
Visitation with the family was Thursday,
Oct. 16, from 3 to 7 p.m. in St. Paul's Retirement Community,
3602 South Ironwood Drive, South Bend, where there was a vigil
service at 5 p.m. A Mass celebrating the life of Sherman Egan
will be held today, Oct. 17, in the chapel at St. Paul's
Retirement Center at 10 a.m., with Fr. Michael Glockner, CSC,
presiding. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery on Portage
Road, South Bend. The Hickey Funeral Home is in charge of
arrangements. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers,
memorial contributions be made to the St. Vincent DePaul Society
or to the Christ Child Society.
