Harold G. Eckert

GRANGER - Harold G. Eckert, 86, residing in Granger, IN passed away at 4:05 PM Thursday, April 1, 2010. Harold was born on November 10, 1923 in South Bend, IN to George C. and Ester S. (Mattke) Eckert. He lived in Chicago, IL and Baraboo, WI. Harold returned to the South Bend area and was a member of the first graduating class of John Adams High School in 1942. On June 14, 1949 in South Bend, IN he married Virginia M. McIntyre, who survives. Harold worked at the Studebaker Corporation as a tool and die maker until they closed. Then he worked as a plastic mold maker until he retired in 1996 from Thermoplastics, Mishawaka. Along with his wife, Virginia M. Eckert he is survived by one son, Eric E. Eckert of Granger and his daughters, Amy Eckert and Caroline Marks; one daughter, Emilie E. Blanco of Hudson, FL and her daughters, Lorienn (Jeffrey B.) Carpenter and Cristienn (Youssef) Joudaane and step daughter, Teri Enna (Sven) Folmer; great granddaughter, Lilienn Carpenter; and step great-granddaughter and grandson, Jazlin Gomez and Garrett Gomez. Harold served in World War II in the United States Army and did a tour in Europe. He served on the board of the Harris Township Trustees while they were developing the Mary Frank School, and during the formation of the Harris Township Fire Deportment. He was also involved in the origination of Penn High School. Harold was a former member of the American Legion Post 303-River Park. He is a member of the Mishawaka VFW Post 360. He has been a member of Harris Prairie Church of Christ, Granger for 56 years, where he served as a Deacon. Harold enjoyed camping, fishing and gardening. He developed a love for making stain glass lamps and windows. He enjoyed the design and challenge of making unique gifts for those he loved. He had a very generous heart. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at Harris Prairie Church of Christ, 14719 State Road 23, Granger, IN 46530. Pastor Ed Erskin, Pastor Larry Williams and Pastor Bob Wiley will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park Granger, IN. Friends may visit with the family from 5:00 - 8:00 PM Monday at Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave, South Bend and at the church on Tuesday a half hour prior to services.
