Mrs. J. H. Eberhart, whose long and painful illness has
been frequently noted of late in the ENTERPRISE, finally found
rest in death on Sunday morning, Dec. 15th, 1889, at 8 o'clock.
Mrs. Eberhart had been in failing health for the past year or
two, and for the past three months had been confined to her bed,
a great but patient sufferer. Her disease seemed to baffle the
physicians, so much so that the family consented to a post mortem
examination after her death to ascertain the nature of the
ailment. The autopsy was accordingly held on Tuesday morning by
Doctors Borough, Van Pelt and Grimes, and discovered the fact
that the deceased had been afflicted with an extensive
tuberculous condition of the bowels, liver, kidneys and other
organs.
Mrs. Eberhart's maiden name was Mary A. McCann. She was
born in Vermont, May 12, 1829, and was consequently in the 61st
year of her age. She was united in marriage to her present
bereaved husband, Dec. 23, 1858, and bore him two children, Mrs.
Will Keyes, of South Bend, and Miss Nellie, who lived at
home. She was an earnest and consistent member of St. Paul's
Episcopal church and was highly respected by a wide circle of
acquaintances who deeply deplore her untimely death.
The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, and was
very numerously attended. Rev. F. Thompson, pastor of St. Paul's
church, and Rev. Mr. Thompson, of Bristol, officiated. There were
a number of handsome floral offerings, including one representing
a broken circle, sent by the Board of Managers of the Northern
Indiana Orphans' Home, of which board the deceased was a valued
member.
