Friday, March 21, 1902
Charles Robert Eberhart, one of Penn township's pioneer
farmers, died suddenly on Friday night last at the home of his
son, Leo Eberhart, of East Battell street, aged 76 years.
His death was due to paralysis and was the third stroke
sustained, the first occurring about a year previous. About a
month ago the deceased had moved in from the farm where he had so
long resided. On the day of his death he was feeling quite well
and had been engaged in hauling in wood. Returning about 5
o'clock in the afternoon, he went to the barn to put up the
horses. Remaining longer than was necessary, the family became
worried and went in search of him. He was found unconscious on
the floor of the stall where he had fallen while unharnessing the
horses.
The stricken man was conveyed to the house and medical aid
summoned, but he was past all earthly help and death ensued at 11
o'clock that night.
Mr. Eberhart was born in Yates county, N. Y., and was a twin
brother of Robert Eberhart who died about a year previous. He
came in 1937 to Mishawaka with his parents who were among Penn
township's very earliest and most prominent settlers. Forty-four
years ago Mr. Eberhart was married to Miss Harriet Corpes,
in Elkhart. Five children were born to them, three of whom with
their mother survive. They are Leo Eberhart, Mrs. Charles Ballard,
of this city, and Mrs. Sylvia Newman, of South Bend. Four
brothers and one sister are also left, John, F. R., J. C.
Eberhart, sr., of this city; Fred Eberhart, sr., living northeast
of Mishawaka, and Mrs. Elizabeth Bryson, of Elkhart. Mr.
Eberhart had been a member of the Methodist church for 50 years.
He was a staunch republican and an excellent citizen.
The funeral was held Monday afternoon from the Willow Creek
church, Rev. Mr. Marsey officiating.
Editor: Burial was in Mishawaka City Cemetery.
