Lucille Marie (Bartkowiak) Eaton, 86, passed away on Wednesday,
Nov. 19, in her daughter's and son-in-law's home in Gaylord,
Mich., after many years of struggling with Alzheimer's disease.
Born in South Bend, Ind., on Nov. 28, 1916, to Stanislaw and
MaryJanna Bartkowiak, Lucille was the fifth of 11 children. She
is survived by a brother, Joseph Bartkowiak of South Bend; and by
sisters, Dorothy Chrzan of Sebring, Fla., Theresa Liwosz and Mary
Catherine Andrzejewski, both of South Bend.
Lucille married Charles Alva Eaton of Plymouth, Ind., in 1934 and
settled in South Bend. Together they owned and operated
"Chucks Van Buren," a small, family grocery store.
Their union produced two children, Robert Lee Eaton and Barbara
Jean Eaton Goszczynski. Lucille survived her husband's death in
1982, her son's death in 1985, and her grandson Keith Eaton's
death in 1991.
Lucille moved from South Bend to her daughter's home in Gaylord
in 1996 at the onset of symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. She had
been a loving and loved member of a large and extended family and
community. She is survived by daughter, Barbara, and son-in-law,
Clement J. Goszczynski, and eight surviving grandchildren, their
spouses and families: Julia Goszczynski Hugel and Dieter Hugel of
New Orleans, La., Charlene Ann Goszczynski of Gaylord, Glen and
Tamara Aldred Goszczynski of Walled Lake, Mich., Roberta Eaton
Palmer and Robert Palmer of Knoxville, Tenn., Douglas and Lisa
Mitchell Eaton of South Bend, John and Sheryl Schaffer Eaton of
Phoenix, Ariz., and Scott and Kimberly Eaton of Osceola, Ind.
Lucille is also survived by 15 great-grandchildren, two with
spouses, and five great-great-grandchildren (one deceased).
Lucille had regularly attended the Otsego Haus senior daycare
center in Gaylord since 2000, and was a parishioner of St. Mary's
Catholic Church. Prior to her illness, she was an accomplished
china painter, and enjoyed coin collecting, playing cards, and
traveling to Florida each winter. Both Lucille and husband
Charles were active in the Knights of Columbus organization prior
to his death, and Lucille was active as a Eucharistic minister at
Holy Cross Church in South Bend prior to her move to Gaylord.
A funeral Mass will be held on Monday, Nov. 24, at 11 a.m. in St.
Mary's Catholic Church. Interment will be at the Riverview
Cemetery in South Bend.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to
the Alzheimer's Association of Northern Michigan, the Otsego
Haus, St. Mary's Catholic Church in Gaylord, or to the Hospice of
Michigan through the Nelson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord,
