Mr. John Dukes, 87, of 246 North
Chicago, Street, South Bend, Ind., departed this life of natural
causes at 6 a.m. on Monday, March 20, in the Meridian-Cardinal
Nursing Center. Mr. Dukes was born on March 20, 1913, in
Pensacola, Fla., to the union of the late Hybart and Fannie
Dukes.
Coming from Pensacola, he had lived in South
Bend since 1942. He was a retired construction worker and a
member of Local #625 Indiana State District Council of Laborers
and Hod Carriers.
He leaves to cherish his memory three
granddaughters, Brenda Dukes, Sandra Dukes and Shirley Dukes; a
grandson, Timothy Allen (and his wife, Tammy) Dukes; two
great-granddaughters, Kierra Dukes and Kiana Dukes; a brother,
Allen (and his wife, Lorraine) Dukes; a sister, Cora Dukes; a
sister-in-law, Rosie Dukes; and by a brother-in-law, Reverend
Nathaniel Wilson, all of Pensacola; two very special
friends, Mrs. Dorothy C. Blake (his caregiver) and Mrs.
Rosie Smith, both of South Bend; and a host of other
relatives, friends and neighbors. Mr. Dukes was preceded in death
by his only son, John Allen Dukes in April 1975; his wife, Helen
Dukes in October 1982; a sister, Fannie Wilson in August
1999; and by a grandson, John Kevin Dukes in January 2000.
Funeral services will be held at noon today,
March 24, in the Cobb Funeral Home, 3525 South Michigan Street,
South Bend. Friends may call one hour before services.
