Sister M. Charity Downs CSC, 79, of
Saint Mary’s Convent, died at 5:30 a.m. today in her
residence after an illness. She was born Iva Laverne Downs on
Oct. 10, 1913 in Kingsley, Mich. She entered the Congregation of
the Sisters of the Holy Cross at St. Mary’s Sept. 14, 1944;
was received as a novice Aug. 15, 1945; and made her final
profession Aug. 15, 1947. She was assigned to clerical duties and
served in the business offices of St. John’s Hospital
in Anderson, Ind.; St. Mary’s Hospital in Cairo, Ill.; and
Our Saviour’s Hospital in Jacksonville, Ill.; from 1948 to
1959. In 1959 she was assigned to St. Mary’s Convent, where
she served in the business office and performed secretarial
duties and was a driver until 1984 when she retired to less
active community duties.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the
Church of Our Lady of Loretto, with burial following in Our Lady
of Peace Cemetery, both at St. Mary’s. Friends may call
after 3 p.m. Thursday in the convent where a wake will be at 7
p.m.
