SOUTH BEND - Ruth H. Douglas, 90, of Southfield Village,
South Bend, IN, passed away at 10:00 PM Sunday, April 20, 2008,
in Memorial Hospital. She was born on February 11, 1918, in
Pittsburgh, PA, to Herbert and Margaret (Homan) Joseph.
She graduated from Langley High School in Pittsburgh in 1936, and
attended Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie-Mellon) thereafter.
She met Franklin Douglas in a Pittsburgh
city choir, and they married in Pittsburgh on September 25, 1938.
He preceded her in death in 1982. The Douglas family has lived in
the Michiana area since 1954. Mrs. Douglas is survived by her
daughter, Jane Anne Gary of South Bend; three sons, Dale
Douglas of Noblesville, IN, James (Elaine) Douglas of Bella
Vista, AR, and John (Linda) Douglas of The Colony, TX; nine
grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one
great-great-grandson. Two brothers, Karl and Jesse Joseph,
preceded her in death. Mrs. Douglas was a member of the St.
Joseph County Purdue Extension Chorus. Mrs. Douglas had a
wonderful sense of humor. She enjoyed gardening, playing music,
sewing, birds and dogs. She taught piano for many years. She was
a former member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and was
currently a member of Grace United Methodist.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM
today, April 23, 2008, in the Palmer Funeral Home-River Park,
2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, IN. Rev. Mary Hubbard and Rev.
David Schrader will officiate. Graveside services and burial will
follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, IN. Friends
visited with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, and may also
call one hour prior to services today in the funeral home.
