MISHAWAKA - Carl E. Douberteen Jr., 84, of Mishawaka,
passed away Sunday, April 29, 2007, in Hospice House of South
Bend. Carl was born on July 5, 1922, in Chicago, Ill. He was
raised by Alice and John Cathcart.
Carl married the former Delores L. Hess
July 30, 1943, in Elkhart. She preceded him in death on July 14,
1981. Carl married his second wife, the former Dorthea Nelson
in 1983. She died April 25, 2004. Carl is survived by a son,
Dennis (Annette) Douberteen of Granger, IN, and a daughter, Debra
(Douberteen) Martin of Elkhart, IN. Carl was a loving
grandfather to four grandchildren, Stacey (Jason) Miller
of Syracuse, IN, David (Shelly) Douberteen of Indianapolis, Todd
Martin of Elkhart and Aaron Douberteen of Seattle, Washington. He
is also survived by four great-grandchildren.
Carl served his country during WW II in the
United States Army, receiving an honorable discharge in 1945.
Carl's battles and campaigns took place in Normandy, northern
France, the Rhineland and Central Europe. Carl retired from Miles
Laboratories as a maintenance worker in 1987. Carl was a union
member of the United Steelworkers as a sheet-metal laborer. He
was a member of the V.F.W. and the D.A.V. He also was a member of
Clay United Methodist Church. Carl collected stamps and coins as
a hobby. He also enjoyed playing golf.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m.
to noon Friday, May 4, 2007, in Clay United Methodist Church,
17646 Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN 46635. The funeral service
will be held at noon following the visitation, with Pastor Herb
Buwalda Jr. officiating at the church. Burial will follow at Rice
Cemetery in Elkhart, IN. Memorial contributions may be made to
Hospice House of St. Joseph County or to Clay United Methodist
Church.
