SOUTH BEND - Luther Dixon Jr., 70,
died at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in Meridian Nursing Center-Cardinal
after an illness. Mr. Dixon, formerly of East Campeau Street,
retired in 1988 from the South Bend schools after 32 years of
service as a principal and teacher.
He was born Feb. 9, 1925, in Memphis,
Tenn., and had lived in South Bend since 1950. On Dec. 23, 1947,
in Hopkinsville, Ky., he married Frances Anne Poindexter. She
survives with two daughters, Pamela Dixon of Radcliff, Ky., and
Beverly Dixon of South Bend; and a sister, Lynette Smith of Louisville.
He was a graduate of Kentucky State
University and New York University. He was boys work director of
the former Herring House Community Center; a member of Pilgrim Baptist
Church and Kappa Alpha Psi; former board member of Teachers
Credit Union; and served on the board of directors of Friends of
the Unemployed, Family & Children's Center, and the YMCA.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday
in Pilgrim Baptist Church. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m.
Friday in Alford's Mortuary.
