Trevelyn ''Trev'' M. DeWitt, 83, formerly of South Bend, died on Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at Memorial Medical Center in Ludington, Mich., following an extended illness. Trevelyn was born Jan. 27, 1915, in Goshen, to Lloyd and Audrey (Spencer) DeWitt. He attended school in South Bend, graduating from Riley High School.

 

He was married on May 30, 1947, in South Bend to Mary Jane Tollens, who survives. Also surviving are three sisters, Evelyn Niece of Three Rivers, Mich., Carol Hartranft of Union, Mich., and Mary Alice Linton of Edwardsburg, Mich.; a brother, Frederick R. DeWitt of Lake Placid, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Trev was a veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Air Force and was a recipient of several awards for valor received as a turret gunner and engineer on a Flying Fortress. Those awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and Soldier's Medal. He completed 31 combat missions. He owned and operated Taylor Heavy Hauling in South Bend from 1954 until his retirement in 1976. He and his wife then moved to their Ludington home.

 

He was a member of the Council Oak Lodge No. 745, F. & A.M., the South Bend Consitory of the Scottish Rite and the Orak Temple of the Shrine of Michigan City, Ind. He was also a member of the Ludington Lodge 736, B.P.O.E., life member of the Disabled American Veterans and a life member of the 305th Bombardment Group Memorial Life Association. He enjoyed fishing and working on his farm in Freesoil, Mich.

 

Visitation will be on Wednesday, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Thallemer-Goethals Funeral Home, Mishawaka. Services will be held in the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the F. & A.M. Lodge No. 745 officiating. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola with V.F.W. Post 360 conducting military burial rights. Memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Medical Center Heart Fund, Ludington, Mich.
