SOUTH BEND - Emiel J. DeWitte, 85, passed away at 3:17 p.m. on
Tuesday, March 9, 2010 in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center,
Mishawaka. Emiel was born on September 5, 1924 in Mishawaka to
the late, Octave and Sidonia (Vandewalle) DeWitte, he was
preceded in death by two children, Christine in 1949 and by
Matthew in 1951 and by his brother, August DeWitte and by his
sister, Alyce Fredericks. On June 1, 1946 he married Loretta
(Dooms) in Mishawaka. She survives along with their four
children, Mary (William) Land of Cincinnati, OH, Theresa (Randy)
Matthys of South Bend, Michelle Johnson of South Bend and Mark
(Louise) DeWitte of South Bend; eight grandchildren, Christopher,
Andrea, Douglas, Lauren, Erik, Matthew, Brian and Kevin; and by
two great-granddaughters, Margaret and Heleana. Emiel graduated
from Mishawaka High School in 1942. He served in the United
States Navy during WWII. He worked for Torrington Company from
1949 to April 1984. He then worked for CM Grinding from November
1984 to July 1997. Emiel enjoyed bowling, golfing, cooking,
playing cards, especially Euchre and "99". He enjoyed
summer vacations at Gravel Lake. He was a Cubs and IU basketball
fan. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to
Holy Family Catholic Church, 56405 Mayflower Rd. South Bend, IN
46619. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday,
March 12, 2010 in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Rd
where a Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 p.m. Mass of Christian
Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 13,
2010 in Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial will follow in
Riverview Cemetery. For those who are unable to attend the
Funeral Mass, condolences for the family may be made at www.sjfh.net
