Helen C. DeWinter (July 4, 1918 -- Aug. 10, 2003)

Helen C. DeWinter, 85, of Mishawaka, Ind., passed away Sunday, Aug. 10, in her home.

She was born in South Bend Ind., to Stephen and Helen (Gyalus) Bokor. Helen attended St. Stephen's Catholic School in South Bend. On Nov. 26, 1938, in St. Stephen's Church, she married Eugene DeWinter. Helen was preceded in death by her husband Eugene in 1974; brothers, Eugene Bokor and Steve Bokor; and by sisters, Mary Sebok, Irene Hawkins and Lillian Darmos.

Helen was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka, the Rosary Society and the National Catholic Society of Foresters. She loved to cook Hungarian foods, and many of the recipes came from her mother. Helen looked forward to Wednesday night bingo with her lady friends. She spent many hours crocheting items for family and friends.

Her surviving family includes her children, Robert (Judy) DeWinter of South Bend, Barbara (Roger) Spitaels of Mishawaka, Ronald (Elizabeth) DeWinter of Mishawaka and James (Jane) DeWinter of Mishawaka; 13 grandchildren, Lori (Rick) McCune, Jim (Kim) Spitaels, Kristie (Bill) Clark, Brian Spitaels, Lisa (Eric) Larson, Andrea (Roger) Morton, Jean DeWinter, Deborah (Mike) Cseh, Douglas DeWinter, Jeremy DeWinter, Jenna DeWinter, Mike (Jaime) Atkinson and Christopher (Rhonda) Atkinson; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday in the Thallemer-Goethals Funeral Home, 503 W. Third St., Mishawaka, where the Rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 225 S. Mill St., Mishawaka, with Rev. Fr. Robert Yast officiating. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, Ind.

Helen's family would like to say many thanks to her caregivers, Tracy, Elenore, Cheri and Judy, and to the Hospice nurses who provided us with their loving care and guidance.
