August J. DeWinter, 86, of Mishawaka, Ind., died suddenly on Wednesday, March 19. He was born Jan. 3, 1917, in Mishawaka, a son of the late Ceaser and Mathilda (Verhaegen) DeWinter.
Augie grew up in Mishawaka and on Sept. 4, 1937, he married the former Margurite Brown. He worked at the Oliver Corporation until leaving to serve his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He later worked for Studebaker and retired from Portage Oil after many years there. Augie was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, BK Club and the Eagles. A favorite pastime was caring for his yard. Augie and Margurite have many fond memories of camping over the years throughout North America.
Augie's family was an important part of his life. They include his wife, Margurite; two sons, Terry (Kay) DeWinter of Arkansas and Mike (Anne) DeWinter of Mishawaka; four grandchildren, Aaron, Bob, Duane and Randy DeWinter; 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; and by a sister-in-law, Helen DeWinter. He was preceded in death by a brother, Gene, and by a sister, Augusta Steenbeke.
Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday in the Thallemer-Goethals Funeral Home, 503 West Third Street, Mishawaka, where the Rosary will be at 2:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am. Monday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Fr. Robert Yast officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, Ind.
