SOUTH BEND - Sophia M. Devaney, 78, of Ostemo Place, died at 8:30 a.m. Sunday in Meridian Nursing Center-Cardinal, after an illness. Mrs. Devaney retired in 1987 as a school crossing guard in Clinton, Mass., after 26 years of service. She was born Sept. 1, 1917, in Shenandoah, Pa., and lived in South Bend for 15 months.
On Sept. 3, 1951, in Clinton, as Sophia M. Danowski, she married Claude J. Devaney. He died Nov. 2, 1977. She is survived by two daughters, Elaine Devaney of Natick, Mass., and Patricia Alexander of Dearborn, Mich.; a son, Claude J. Jr. of South Bend; six grandchildren; three sisters, Stella Guinn of Shenandoah, Dorothy Goding of Raton, N.M., and Laura Ragowski of Cornwall-On-Hudson, N.J.
Services will be conducted Friday in St. John's Catholic Church, Clinton. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Lancaster, Mass. McGann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
