Kenneth R. Dettweiler

Jan. 1, 1926 - Sept. 3, 1996

Kenneth R. Dettweiler, 70, of 3404 E. Jackson Blvd., Elkhart, Ind., passed away at 3:25 p.m., Tuesday, in Elkhart General Hospital.

He was born on Jan. 1, 1926, in Elkhart. He married Mary Ellen Wargon on June 11, 1949, in Elkhart. She survives. Also surviving is his stepmother, Mrs. K. R. Dettweiler of Rolling Prairie, Ind.

Mr. Dettweiler joined the Bendix Corporation in 1949. He retired as Director of Customer Support, Allied Signal, Bendix Engine Controls Division, in South Bend, in 1992. From 1964 to 1967, he was resident engineer at Svenska Flygmotor Alktebolaget in Trollhattan, Sweden and had traveled world-wide for the company.

He was a member of Bendix Management Club, National Management Association, Bent Oak Golf Club, Summit Club of South Bend, Fernwood Nature Center, Sigma Mu Sigma Fraternity, a life member of the American Philatelic Society, National Model Railroad Association, and Trinity United Methodist Church, where he served as an usher.

He served as a Lieutenant in the U. S. Air Force during World War II and was and avid golfer and model railroader. He was a graduate of Elkhart High School in 1943, received a B.A. degree in Aeronautical Engineering in 1949 from Tri-State University, in Angola, and received his Master's Degree from Michigan State University and the University of Arkansas.

In college, he was active in student affairs - vice president of his senior class; Skull and Bones (scholastic honorary), Inter fraternity Council and a member and officer of Sigma Mu Sigma Fraternity.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, at the Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home, 403 W. Franklin St., Elkhart. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, in Trinity United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Mark Fenstermacher officiating. The body will be cremated, with burial in Rice Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, Fernwood Nature Center in Niles, Mich., Tri-State University in Angola or the charity of one's choice.
