William D. Detlefsen

Aug. 30, 1922 - March 29, 2010
SOUTH BEND - William David Detlefsen, 87, of South Bend, died Monday, March 29, 2010, in Sterling House of South Bend. He was born in Scottsbluff, NE, on August 30, 1922, to Arthur and Evilou (Emery) Detlefsen, who preceded him in death along with his brothers and sisters. William married the former Janette Tuttle in Nebraska on October 4, 1942. He is survived by Janette; two sons, Michael (Martha) Detlefsen of Granger and William (Melba) Detlefsen of Springfield, Oregon; and by seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. William enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and served in the Philippines, New Guinea and Australia. He returned to Nebraska after the war and soon thereafter began his career as a US Government meat inspector. He retired from this in 1987, having spent most of his working life as an inspector at the Hormel plant in Fremont, NE. During his life in Fremont he attended and staunchly supported the Fremont Missionary Alliance Church where he and Janette were members for more than 50 years. William loved his family, neighbors and friends, and was loved by them in return. All who knew him well are thankful for his life and the selfless love he showed to them and others. We will miss having him among us. A private family visitation will be held on Saturday, April 3rd. Bubb Funeral Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. Memorial condolences may be sent to Bubbfuneralchapel.com. Instead of flowers or other memorials, the family requests that memorials be made to the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha (https://shop.omahazoo.com/ssl/annual-fund.asp).
