MISHAWAKA - Joseph DeMeester, 88, of Virginia Beach, Va., formerly of Mishawaka, died at 7 a.m. Sunday in Oakwood Nursing Home, Virginia Beach. Mr. DeMeester retired in 1963 from Mishawaka Police Department after 20 years of service. He was born July 11, 1907, in Kemeke, Belgium, and lived in Mishawaka until 1987.

On Aug. 1, 1931, in Mishawaka, he married Elizabeth VanDePutte. She survives with a daughter, Marie J. Meehan of Virginia Beach; a son, Robert C. of Hattiesburg, Miss.; and seven grandchildren. He was a member of B.K. Club, Knights of Columbus and Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 91, and a former Golden Gloves boxing trainer.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in St. Bavo's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in Hahn Funeral Home, where a wake will be at 4 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association.
