Elizabeth DeMeester, 95, a former resident of Mishawaka, Ind., passed away on Saturday, Jan. 6, in the Conva-Rest Nursing Home, Hattiesburg, Miss. Mrs. DeMeester was born on Sept. 18, 1905, in Atkinson, Ill., as the daughter of the late August and Eugenia (DeBrock) Vande Putte.
On Aug. 1, 1931, in Mishawaka, as the former Elizabeth Vande Putte, she married Joseph DeMeester, who preceded her in death on Nov. 12, 1995. She was also preceded in death by three sisters and one brother. She is survived by a daughter, Marie J. Meehan of Virginia Beach, Va.; a son, Robert C. (Pat) DeMeester of Hattiesburg; six granddaughters, a grandson and a great-granddaughter; and by a brother, Wilbur Vande Putte of Mishawaka.
Mrs. DeMeester was a member of St. Bavo's Catholic Church, Mishawaka, for all of her adult life, before leaving this area in 1989. She had served her church as a member of the choir, the altar society, and the Theresians. She was also a member of the Women's Police Auxiliary.
Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 10, in the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka, where a Rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at noon on Thursday, Jan. 11, in St. Bavo's Catholic Church, with Rev. Barry England officiating. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Osceola, Ind. Contributions in memory of Mrs. DeMeester may be made to St. Bavo's Catholic School, 511 W. 7th Street, Mishawaka, IN 46544.
