SOUTH BEND - James E. DeLong, 83, died Friday, May 21, 2010, at
the Golden Living Center in Elkhart. The South Bend native was
born August 30, 1926, to Nolan and Elsie (Montgomery) DeLong. Mr.
DeLong was a U.S. Navy veteran of WW II, was formerly employed at
Studebaker and had retired from Toledo Scales. A beloved husband,
father and grandfather, Jim was an active member of Pleasant
Valley United Church of Christ, St. Joe Lodge #45, F.&A.M.
South Bend Valley Scottish Rite and V.F.W. Post #360. He loved
the outdoors and enjoyed fishing and spending time working on his
yard, as well as following the Cubs and Notre Dame football.
Survivors include his wife, Doris DeLong; daughter, Karol
(Thomas) Erlacher; son, Kim DeLong; sister, Betty Brown; and his
grandchildren, Amber, Kayla Kyle, Erin and Eric Erlacher, and
Laci DeLong. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Ray and
Don, and by his sister, Lois. Funeral services 2:00 PM Tuesday,
May 25, 2010, in the Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley
Hwy. Friends may call Monday from 4-8 PM in the funeral home.
Burial at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family's preferred
memorials are to The Alzheimer's Disease & Related Disorders
Association or to Pleasant Valley United Church of Christ. To
