SOUTH BEND - Richard W. "Dick" Deguch, 72, of
South Bend, IN, passed away at 10:20 a.m. Saturday, March 8,
2008, in Memorial Hospital. Richard was born on May 8, 1935, in
South Bend, to Walter and Helen (Grochowski) Deguc,
who both preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were
his son, Paul Deguch; and his sister, Dorothy Deguch. Richard was
employed with Torrington for twenty-four years, and with the
South Bend Community School Corporation for twenty years at
LaFayette Elementary School as a custodian, retiring in January
2002.
On June 18, 1960, in Holy Family Church, he
married Lucy K. Flatoff, who survives. Also surviving are
one daughter, Sue Ann (Jeff) Steininger of South Bend, IN;
one son, Chris Deguch of South Bend, IN; one daughter-in-law,
Annette Deguch of South Bend, IN; five grandchildren, David
Deguch, Theo Deguch, Mackenzie Deguch, Maria Steininger and Max
Steininger.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at
10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 12, 2008, in St. Casimir Church.
Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from
2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix
Drive, where a Rosary will be held at 4 p.m.
Richard was a member of St. Casimir Parish
where he served as an Usher and Eucharistic Minister. He was a
1953 graduate of Washington High School where he ran track and
hurdles, and held school records in those events for several
years. He was a member of the Washington High School Boosters
Club. Richard served in the United States Army from 1958-1960. He
sang and played the accordion and had a polka band called the
"Melody Boys" for twenty years. In lieu of flowers,
memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association
or to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care. Richard was
always a caring and kind person, loved by all, and he will be
truly missed!
