Alphonse J. DeFreeuw, 71, of Portage Road, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 1:15 p.m. on Sunday, March 26, in Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center. Mr. DeFreeuw was born on June 25, 1928, to the late John Paul and Carrie (Kreczmer) DeFreeuw in South Bend, and remained a lifelong resident. He was employed with the former Studebaker Corporation. When the Studebaker Corporation closed Mr. DeFreeuw began his own auto part and hubcap business.
In January 1950 he married Dolores Rose Fras in South Bend. She preceded him in death on Feb. 18, 1998. He was also preceded in death by three sisters and a brother. He is survived by a daughter, Kim Brown of New Carlisle, Ind.; a son, Tim DeFreeuw of South Bend; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; a sister, Marlene J. Wafer of Mishawaka, Ind.; a brother, Jon DeFreeuw of South Bend; and by several nieces and nephews.
Mr. DeFreeuw was a member of Christ the King Parish, was a United States Army veteran serving during the 1950s, and was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting, and all nature.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. today, March 29, in Christ the King Catholic Church. Entombment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends called from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 28, in the KANIEWSKI FUNERAL HOME, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a parish Rosary was prayed at 7 p.m.
