Iris June Douglas Deardorff, 85, of
E. Fox Street, South Bend, died at 9:30 p.m. on Friday, April 13,
in her home. She was born on Feb. 1, 1916, in Leesburg, Indiana,
to Elvin and Velma (Dye) Shock, both preceding in
death. Her son, Bruce A. Douglas, preceded in death on
Oct. 6, 2000. Also preceding in death were her two sisters,
Lucille Yenna and Maxine Taelman; two brothers, Ray
and Carl Shock; and a granddaughter, Wendy Douglas. On Aug. 25,
1934, as June Shock, she married Ralph A. Douglas, who died on
Jan. 17, 1960. Then, on May 18, 1962, she married James
Deardorff, who died on Feb. 27, 1984. June is survived by a
daughter and son-in-law, Dixie and John Thurin of South
Bend; by a daughter-in-law, Judy Douglas of South Bend; a
stepdaughter, Linda Deardorff of Mishawaka; and by a stepson,
John Deardorff of Mishawaka. Also surviving are her sister, Helen
Chamness of Mishawaka; and her two brothers, Dale (Marge)
Shock of LaPorte, Indiana, and by Wayne (Lee) Shock of Plymouth,
Indiana. She is survived by her six grandchildren, Beth (Brent) Chamberlin,
Bruce (Kelli) Veclotch and Todd Douglas, all of South
Bend, Renee Eskew of Taylorsville, Georgia, Cristina (Joe)
Savalli of Canton, Georgia, and Jerry (Michelle) Bowman
of Mishawaka; and by 11 great-grandchildren, Mathew, Nathan
and Amanda Chamberlin, Kristi Nicole Douglas, Austin, Derek and
Taylor Eskew, Jessica, Katlyn and Kelsey Savalli, and Jake Thomas
Bowman.
After high school June worked at Ball Band
and then at Custom Gears. Along with her first husband Ralph, she
was co-owner of The Karmelkorn Shop in downtown South Bend on the
corner of Main and Colfax Avenue from 1952 until 1962. From 1961
until 1965 she managed the candy department at Goldblatz
Department Store. June was a 46-year member of Ridgedale
Presbyterian Church where she had served as a deacon. She was a
member of the Osceola Chapter #598 Order of Eastern Star. Being
an avid bridge player, she was a member of several bridge clubs.
She enjoyed her quiet time working in her flower beds at home.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on
Wednesday, April 18, in Ridgedale Presbyterian Church, 1406 E.
Ewing Avenue, South Bend, with Dr. Jack Volkers officiating.
Interment will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park,
Granger, Ind. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today in the
Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend, where
Osceola Chapter #598, Order of Eastern Star, will hold a memorial
service at 7 p.m. today.
Memorial contributions may be made to either
the church or to Hospice of St. Joseph County.
