SOUTH BEND - Albert C. Davis, 84, of South Bend, IN, died at
10:16 a.m. Saturday, March 13, 2010, surrounded by his loving
family after courageously fighting a lengthy illness under the
supportive and trusted care of Shaya Mokfi, M.D. He was born on
August 9, 1925, to the late Albert and Noemi (Probst) Davis in
South Bend, IN, and was a lifelong resident. On July 26, 1947, he
married Shirley M. Niven at St. Joseph Catholic Church in South
Bend, IN. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Shirley
M. Davis of South Bend; five daughters, Susan (Dennis) George and
Nancy (Peter) Toth, both of Chantilly, VA, Janet (Terry) Niven of
Buchanan, MI, Mary (Joel) Hall of Brownsburg, IN, and Marcia
(Jeff) Peterson of Vernon Hills, IL; three sons, Tom (Helen)
Davis of Niles, MI, Bob Davis and John (Laurie) Davis, both of
Granger, IN; 25 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and
a sister, Rita (John) Crimmins of Angola, IN. Mr. Davis retired
in 1990 from the Koontz-Wagner Electric Company in South Bend,
IN, where he worked as an electrical estimator. He was member of
Electrical Workers Union Local #153 and American Legion Post
#284. Albert was an active member of Christ the King Parish,
where he volunteered for many church and parish functions. He was
also a Boy Scout volunteer; helped coach and umpire little league
baseball; enjoyed camping, fishing, bowling and was an avid Notre
Dame fan. Although, closest to his heart, was spending time
laughing and making memories with his family. Albert was
especially proud of being a U.S. Army veteran of World War II,
where he served in the 95th Division with the 320th Combat
Engineers Battalion. He remained very close with his comrades and
their families through attending annual reunions. Visitation will
be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, 2010, in the
Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN,
where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 3:30 p.m. A Mass of
Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 18,
2010, in Christ the King Catholic Church. Burial will follow at
Southlawn Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted by
American Legion Post #284. In lieu of flowers, memorial
contributions may be made to Christ the King Catholic Church,
