Frederic "Fred" Jay Daniels, 77, of 759 Ule Trail, Walkerton, Ind., died after an extended illness at 12:35 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 21, in the Maple Lawn Group Home, Koontz Lake, Ind. He was born on Oct. 5, 1923, in South Bend, Ind., to the late Andrew Jay Daniels and Cecelia Elizabeth (Boughton) Daniels.
He retired as a lieutenant from Indiana Corrections, Westville, Ind., after 30 years of employment. He came to Walkerton on Oct. 5, 1946, after serving in the Navy. He was a member of the Walkerton United Methodist Church, was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and was a member of American Legion Post #189, Walkerton.
On June 16, 1945, in Somerville, Mass., he married Mildred J. "Millie" McDonough, who survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Phyllis (William Jr.) Hullinger of Baroda, Mich., and Connie Sult of Walkerton; a son, Terry W. (Kristin) Daniels of Osceola, Ind.; eight grandchildren, William Hullinger III, Amy (Matt) Stoll, William (Sherry) Daniels, Christopher (Nancy) Daniels, Chad Sult, James (Monica) Sult, Ryan (Angie) Blasko and Erin Blasko; four great-grandchildren; and by two sisters, Winifred Faber of Connecticut and Ruth (Don) Weigel of South Bend.
The family will receive visitors from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Jan. 23, in the NUSBAUM-ELKIN FUNERAL HOME. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday in the United Methodist Church, 1000 Georgia Street, Walkerton, where friends may call one hour prior to services. Contributions may be made to Hospice of Marshall County.
