SOUTH BEND - Ed Dams was born Edward Joseph Domachowski in
Milwaukee. He was a photographer from the age of seven when he
got a job earning a dollar a week making contact prints for a
local studio. The country was still deep in The Depression, and
many grown men weren't earning that much. When he graduated from
high school he opened his own studio in Milwaukee and went from
there to Detroit to work for Jeffery White. After a stint in the
Army he went to work as a newspaper photographer for the Fargo
(North Dakota) Forum where in 1957 his photography of a
disastrous tornado and its aftermath won the Pulitzer Prize. In
the sixties, he moved to Chicago where he worked as a fashion
photographer and continued his own passion for fine-arts
photography. In 1965 he joined Digest Books as an associate
editor, leaving this job when in 1971 he married Jeanne Martin
and moved to South Bend. There he was hired by Schillings
Printing Company, where he worked until that business closed and
he opened his own print shop, Granger Graphics. A stroke in 1994
forced an early retirement, but he continued making pictures and
pursuing his new interest in machining. At his death he was
working on a book about photographic techniques. Ed will be
remembered by his many friends for his wit and his beautiful
pictures. A requiem Mass will be said at St. Paul's Episcopal
Church, Mishawaka, on Saturday, October 31, at 11:00 a.m. Family
and friends may visit an hour before the service in the church.
His widow requests that, in lieu of flowers, any memorial
contributions be made to the Food Bank of Northern Indiana, 702
Chapin, South Bend, IN 46601. Hahn Funeral Home, Mishawaka, has
been entrusted with handling the final arrangements. To leave the
family an online condolence or to share memories with the family,
