SOUTH BEND - John Joseph Cybulski, 77, of Bangor, MI, died
peacefully Monday evening, March 8, 2010, at White Oaks in Lawton
following a six-month battle with cancer. The family met friends
6-8 PM Wednesday, March 10th, at the Bangor Chapel, D.L. Miller
Funeral Home, with a Rosary service at 7:30 PM. Mass of Christian
Burial will be 11:00 AM today in Sacred Heart Church, Bangor,
with Fr. Gordon Greene, celebrant. Interment will follow at
Highland Cemetery, South Bend, IN. The family suggests memorials
be made to his favorite TV station, WGVU, Public Television
Station, or to the St. Vincent De Paul Food Bank. John was born
January 11, 1933, in South Bend, IN, the son of John and
Clementine Cybulski. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S.
Army during the Korean War where he was in charge of the
maintenance and upkeep of the super generators that ran all the
bases in S. Korea. After his discharge. he returned to his job at
the Bendix Corporation until his retirement 30 years later. While
at Bendix he was one of only three people in the USA to work on
fuel controls for F-16s and other military aircraft. During a
layoff from Bendix he worked as a cement-concrete employee,
laying blocks and internal-step porches as well as street work
for the City of South Bend. He also helped install the very first
landing strobe lights at the South Bend Regional Airport. Moving
to Bangor in 1966 to fulfill his dream of owning a farm, he
continued to work at Bendix until his retirement. After
retirement he acquired a degree in air-conditioning and
refrigeration, acted as trustee on the Arlington Township Board,
and spent time as treasurer for the Bangor Fire Department. John
was a member of the American Legion Post in Bangor and was a
lifelong member of VFW Post #9820 in South Bend. His most
enjoyable time spent in retirement was visiting, hunting and
fishing with his friends from the Cal-Fields Gun Club. Surviving
are his wife, Louise "Patterson," who he married April
26, 1952; five children, Bill Cybulski of Bangor, Diane (Mike)
Berry of Bangor, Mary (Richard Jackson) McDonald of Marshall, AR,
John Steven (Deb) Cybulski of Goshen, IN, and Laura (Jim) Cosby
of Portage; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and
two brothers, Danny (Lorraine) of South Bend and Ralph (Regina)
of South Bend. He was preceded in death by his parents and by two
sisters, Val Nye and Leona Wiencek.
