Robert K. Currens

SOUTH BEND - Robert K. "Bob" Currens, 88, died Friday, August 22, in Memorial Hospital. He was born April 16, 1920, in Burr Oak, IN, to the late Jerald T. and M. Edith (Overmyer) Currens. He received his grade school education at the one-room school in Burr Oak. He graduated from Argos High School in 1938. During World War II he served 46 months in the U.S. Army Air Force as a crew chief and flight engineer with the 5th Tow Target Squadron with the rank of staff sergeant. He and Betty R. Listenberger were married on March 22, 1944, in Houston, TX. They came to South Bend in 1947. She preceded him in death on February 27, 2002. Bob worked at Ball Band as a foreman in the Form Department, but in 1950 left to work at the Bendix Corporation in South Bend where he was a foreman in Aviation Fuel Controls. He retired in 1982 as a supervisor in the Automotive Stamping Division. He was a member of the Bendix Salaried Retirees Club, a life member of American Legion Post #284 and the National Rifle Association. He is survived by a son, John P. Currens of Pescadero, CA; a daughter, Jennifer (Charles) Lahey of South Bend; two grandchildren, Brendan K. Lahey of South Bend and Eleanor H. Lahey of New Orleans, LA, who were his pride and joy; and a sister, Gwen Eger of Arizona.

 

Per Bob's wishes, there will be no visitation. A private interment will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery in Argos, IN. Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St., is assisting the family with arrangements.
