SOUTH BEND Robert J. Cressy,
64, a county police corporal died at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at St.
Joseph Medical Center, after a brief illness. He apparently had
suffered a cerebral hemorrhage. He had served as a county
policeman for 14 years, and was one of two persons held hostage
on April 12th when a group of prisoners took over the county
jail. His death apparently was unrelated to that incident. He was
born Jan. 9, 1917 in South Bend, and had lived here most of his
life.
On Feb. 14, 1940 in South Bend, he married
Dorothy M. Williams, who survives. Also surviving is his
mother Catherine L. Cressy of South Bend; two daughters. Mrs. Jo
Anne Bowe and Mrs. Catherine Lovitt, both of South
Bend; two sons. Thomas J. and Guy R., both of South Bend; 13
grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Peggy Swain of South Bend
and Mrs. Sally Woods of Laguna Beach, Calif.; and three
brothers, Jack and Ralph, both of Chicago, and Leonard of
California.
Services will be at10 a.m. Wednesday in St.
Joseph Catholic Church. Rev. Edward J. Ruetz, director of
pastoral care at St. Joseph Hospital will officiate. Burial will
be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Friends may call
from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the McGann Funeral Home,
where the rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday. He was a
member of FOP Lodge 155, a World War II Air Force veteran. He
served 12 years of active duty in the Air Force and 12 years in
the Air Force Reserve
