Herschel L. Craig, 75, residing on South Main Street, South Bend, Ind., passed away peacefully at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 5, in the Ironwood Health and Rehabilitation Center. Mr. Craig was born Aug. 11, 1926, in Bloomington, Ind., as the son of James and LaVerna (Brooks) Craig. He attended Anderson College, Anderson, Ind., before moving to South Bend in 1949, coming from Bedford, Ind.
On Nov. 26, 1950, in South Side Church of God, South Bend, he married Phyllis I. Woodcox. He is survived by his wife of nearly 51 years, Phyllis; two daughters, Rosemary (Mark) Hostetler of Elkhart, Ind., and Colleen (Greg) Shafer of Mentone, Ind.; five sons, Clement Craig of South Bend, Calvin (Betty) Craig of Rialto, Calif., Roger Craig of Mishawaka, Ind., Robert (Tiffany) Craig of Adelphia, Md., and Rodney (Kristina) Craig of South Bend; 12 grandchildren, one step-grandson and four great-grandchildren; and by three sisters, Mary Warren of Bedford, Ind., Pauline Willis of Shaumberg, Ill., and Ruth Davis of Florida.
Herschel retired from Walt's Restaurant in South Bend. He was a longtime member of South Side Church of God where he served as usher and greeter for many years. He also served his country during World War II in the United States Army.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 9, in South Side Church of God, 7351 U.S. 31 South. Rev. Greg D. Crump, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend, and one hour prior to services on Friday in the church.
