SOUTH BEND - Rev. Daniel C. Coughlin CSC, 92, died on Sunday, November 18, 2007, in Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, IN. Fr. Daniel C. Coughlin, CSC, was born November 23, 1914, in Boston, MA, to John and Barbara (Cooke) Coughlin. After attending public grade schools he graduated from the Boston High School of Commerce in 1931 and then attended classes at the Bentley School of Accounting and Finance, also in Boston, MA. While working as a clerk for the Boston Police Department, he applied for admission to Holy Cross and entered Holy Cross Seminary at Notre Dame in September 1940.

After finishing the novitiate and taking first vows in August 1943, he returned to Notre Dame and graduated with a degree in philosophy in 1946. After four years of theology at Holy Cross College in Washington, D.C., Fr. Dan was ordained to the priesthood at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on June 6, 1950. In his first assignment, Fr. Dan spent five years at Sacred Heart Church in New Orleans, followed by 10 years, 1955-65, on the Holy Cross Mission Band. He assisted for the next two years at St. Joseph's Parish, South Bend, then for five years in California, giving retreats from 1967-1972. Moving his center of operations to the Holy Cross Mission House in North Dartmouth, MA, in 1972, he continued in retreat work until 1975.

Accepting the opportunity to assist at St. John the Evangelist Parish in New York City, he stayed there until being assigned to Christ the King Parish in South Bend in 1979. In 1985 he moved across town to St. Casimir Parish, and nine years later went to St. Jude Parish for one year. Beginning in 1996, Fr. Dan lived and assisted at St. Stanislaus Parish in South Bend, IN. In June 2001 he moved to Holy Cross House. Fr. Coughlin was preceded in death by his parents, John and Barbara (Cooke) Coughlin; his brothers, John Coughlin and Bart Coughlin; and a sister, Mary Coughlin. He is survived by a sister, Barbara Cunniff, and numerous nephews and nieces.

Viewing for Fr. Coughlin will be held in the chapel of Moreau Seminary, University of Notre Dame, today, Nov. 20th, from 3:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a wake service at 7:30 p.m. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Sacred Heart Basilica, Notre Dame, on Wednesday, Nov. 21st, at 3:30 p.m. Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
