Alice E. Costello

Alice E. Costello, 86, of South William Street, passed away at 2:06 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Costello retired from the St. Joseph County Assessor's Office where she was employed for over 30 years.

Alice was born on March 15, 1915, in Marion, Ind., to Aymer and Elnora Tappan. She moved to South Bend, Ind., in 1925 and graduated from Riley High School. On June 30, 1938, in South Bend, as Alice Tappan, she married Joseph P. Costello, who died on June 27, 1981. Alice was also preceded in death by a son, Paul C. Costello, and by a granddaughter, Lisa.

She is survived by a daughter, Antoinette "Toni" Slabaugh of South Bend; a son, Ralph K. and his wife, Julie Costello of South Bend; a daughter-in-law, Esther Costello of South Bend; eight grandchildren, Gina, Becky, Cathy, Amy, Laura, Paul Jr., Ken and Stacy; and by nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, in Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church. The family will greet friends one-half hour prior to the Mass in the church.

n lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to Hospice of St. Joseph County.
