SOUTH BEND - Leo M. Corbaci, 72, of
Oak Ridge Drive, died at 5 p.m. Monday in his home after an
illness. Mr. Corbaci was former dean of administration at the
University of Notre Dame. He retired in 1985. He was born Oct.
31, 1921, in Meyersdale, Pa., and lived in South Bend since 1959,
coming from Pittsburgh.
On May 1, 1946, in Albany, N.Y., he married
Margarita E. Williams. She survives with a brother,
Anthony of Somerset, Pa.; three nieces; and three nephews. He was
an Army veteran and a member of American Association of
University Registrars, Indiana Association of University
Registrars, College and University Computer Users Association,
Notre Dame Alumni Association, Duquesne University Alumni
Association, and BPO Elks.
Services will be 3:30 p.m. Thursday in
Sacred Heart Basilica. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery,
Notre Dame. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today in Hickey
Funeral Home, 17131 Cleveland Road, where a rosary will be said
at 7 p.m. Friends may call from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday in Our
Lady Chapel at the Basilica. Memorial contributions may be made
to Hospice of St. Joseph County Inc.
SOUTH BEND - Leo M. Corbaci, former dean of
administration at the University of Notre Dame, died at 5 p.m.
Monday in his home after an illness. He was 72. Mr. Corbaci, of
Oak Ridge Drive, who retired in 1985, received two degrees from
Duquesne University before moving to Notre Dame in 1950, where he
began advanced studies in economics.
After receiving a master's degree from Notre
Dame a year later, he began teaching economics at Notre Dame
while studying on the campus and at Syracuse University. In 1956,
he became an assistant professor of economics and administrative
assistant to the vice president of academic affairs. Three years
later, Mr. Corbaci achieved the rank of associate professor and
was named assistant vice president for academic affairs. Mr.
Corbaci was promoted to university registrar and assistant
provost in 1970. He was currently associate professor of
economics (emeritus).
He received the 1973 Frank Martin Award from
the University Administrative Computer Association; the 1991
Professional Development Citation from the American Registrar
Association; and the 1987 Indiana Registrar Distinguished
Contribution Plaque.
While dean of administration at Notre Dame,
he received Duquesne's Distinguished Alumnus Medal in 1978. Notre
Dame awarded him a Presidential Citation at its 1972
commencement, and he is the ninth recipient of the O'Hara Award.
He was a member of American Association of University Registrars,
Indiana Association of University Registrars, College and
University Computer Users Association, Notre Dame Alumni
Association, Duquesne University Alumni Association, and BPO
