Paul M. Cooreman, 85, of New Carlisle, Ind., died at 12:15 a.m. Friday, May 16, in Hamilton Communities in New Carlisle. Born to Judoc and Helena (Verplaetse) Cooreman in Walnut Grove, Minn., he had resided and farmed in Olive Township, New Carlisle, since 1941. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Judoc and Helena Cooreman; his sister, Mary Landuyt; a brother, Marcell Cooreman; a grandson, Rick Coppens; a nephew, Dennis Landuyt; and by a niece, Becky Landuyt.
On June 22, 1940, he married Elsie C. Truyaert. He is survived by his loving wife, Elsie; his son, Jim (Joan) of New Carlisle; his daughter, Judy (Bryan) Smith of LaPorte, Ind.; three grandchildren, John Cooreman and Jeff Cooreman, both of New Carlisle, and Bryon Coppens of South Bend, Ind.; his brothers, August Cooreman of South Bend and Henry Cooreman of New Carlisle; and by several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Cooreman graduated from New Carlisle High School in 1936, served eight years on the Olive Township Advisory Board and eight years on the New Prairie Board of Education. As a good farmer always looking to learn more, Paul regularly attended New Prairie Farmer's Evening School, was a member of the St. Joseph County Farm Bureau, the Pinney Purdue Advisory Committee, and St. Joseph County Soil and Water Conservation. He was a charter member of the New Carlisle Bowling Association, member of the Mishawaka B.K. Club, and was a past member of South Bend Volkskring. Paul was an avid Notre Dame basketball fan and attended 28 season games with his wife, Elsie. Paul was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish of New Carlisle.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today, May 18, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 3:30 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 19, in St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church, Terre Coupee in New Carlisle, with Rev. Jan Klimczyk officiating. Burial will follow at New Carlisle Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County, Inc., 111 Sunnnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637-3437; or to the St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, 55756 Tulip Road, New Carlisle, IN 46552.
