Sister M. Charleen CSC (Loretta Cecelia Cook), 87, was born in Rawlins, Wyo., July 1, 1913, daughter of Ambrose Cook and Anne Ward Cook. Sister died suddenly January 28, 2001. She is survived by her brother-in-law R.G. Thrift, San Mateo, CA; sister-in-law Frances Cook, Sutherlin, OR; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Sister M. Charleen entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Holy Cross, February 1, 1933. She made her first vows, August 1935 and began her teaching ministry at Saint Agnes School, Los Angeles, CA. She was missioned at Saint Bernards School, Oakland, CA, from 1939 to 1941, and then to Saint Charles School, San Francisco, CA, from 1941 to 1945. Sister Charleen spent 1945-1954 in Salt Lake City, UT, at the Academy of St. Mary-of-the-Wasatch as moderator of the Minims and teacher. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1950. Sister was then sent to Good Shephard School, Beverly Hills, CA, for a year. In 1955 she was transferred to Santa Cruz School, Tucson, AZ, where she was principal until 1961. Sister returned to California to teach at Saint Stanislaus School, Modesto, CA from 1961-1964.
She was then missioned to Bishop Glass School, Salt Lake City,
teaching first grade and being principal from 1964-1972.
Returning to California, Sister taught at Saint Pauls, Los
Angeles, 1972-1979, St. Bernards School, Oakland,
1979-1980, and was a tudor at Saint Agnes School, Los Angeles,
1980-1990. While in St. Agnes Parish, Sister helped in the Andre
Center and assisted with community services. In 1997 Sister
Charleen retired to St. Marys, Notre Dame, and was active
in the ministry of prayer until her sudden death, January 28,
2001.
Memorial contributions made be made to the Sisters of the Holy
Cross Ministry with the poor fund. Reception of the body will be
at 4 p.m. today, in the Church of Loretto, St. Marys. Wake
service will be at 7 p.m. today in the church. Funeral Mass will
be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 31 in the Church of Loretto,
followed by internment at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, St. Marys,
Notre Dame. The Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
